Many homeowners with older roofs may notice black streaks on their roofs. Today, we will discuss the various causes of those black streaks and what can be done to resolve them. We recommend scheduling an inspection to ensure it is something that is not damaging to your home.
1. It can be dirt.
This is the ideal case. Dirt blowing onto your home is relatively harmless. Strong rain can help clean your roof off. It’s worth noting that if cleaning the dirt off can harm your roof, it’s better to leave it alone.
2. It’s algae.
Similar to dirt, algae does not typically hurt your home. However, like dirt, it can be guilty of making your home look older and decrease curb appeal. It can also be a symptom of moisture in the roof system, so when you see this, it’s important to schedule a roofing inspection to make sure the algae isn’t harmful.
3. It is mold/mildew.
This is the outcome homeowners don’t want, but it happens. Mold on your roof can be a big issue, and breathing it in is dangerous. Please seek treatment for it before it spreads and causes more issues. We recommend seeking a professional for this problem.
4. It’s a defective shingle.
Sometimes all your roof abnormalities stem from a defective shingle. If a shingle is cracked or torn then it is more susceptible to problems with algae, dirt, and mold. While a do-it-yourselfer could replace a broken shingle, it does require safety equipment, a ladder, and know-how.
