Black Streaks on Roof

Ever notice that some homes have black streaks on their roof? You may immediately think that it’s just an old roof, but that is not always the case. These black streaks can be caused by a variety of factors, with some reasons being more severe than others.

Today we will go over some of the common causes of these black streaks.

Your Shingles are Defective or Damaged

Let’s get this one out of the way first. Shingles that are defective or damaged can have cracks, holes, or be torn. This creates areas for mold, mildew, dirty and algae to thrive and spread to the surrounding shingles. When this happens it is really important that you get those defective or damaged shingles replaced, as it can lead to even more problems.

The Streaks on Your Roof are Mold and Mildew

Black mold can grow on roofs. When this happens it is imperative you get it treated by a roofing professional. Black mold can be a health hazard for you and your family. It can spread as well to other parts of your home, increasing the potential cost for remediation.

You Have Dirt on your Roof

This is the best case scenario! Sometimes wind can carry dirt on to your roof. This just requires some careful cleaning. Just make sure that you are not damaging your roof in the process

You Have Algae on your Roof

Algae is another good scenario. These black algae streaks are called Gloeocapsa Magma and are one of the most common cases. Algae grows on asphalt tiles and is not as harmful. We still recommend carefully cleaning it, as It can affect your home value however, and may impact your shingles over a longer period of time.
