Impact of Snow on the Roof

The sight of snow piling up on top of roofs and cars is so common in the winter time that we don’t even think twice about the damages it could possibly bring. So before winter gives us a big snow storm, let’s get into how snow affects the roof and how to prevent costly repairs.

Leaks

If there are any previous damages on the roof that weren’t fixed, the snow will melt and leak into the small cracks and holes on the shingles. This will lead to water damage in the attic as well as the ceiling. Best way to prevent this is to repair any damages before snow gets packed on there.

Ice Dams

Ice dams are a common issue that’s related to heavy snow. It’s when the pile of snow melts down the shingles due to the heat coming off the home and freezes again once it gets to the overhang where there’s no heat. When this ice dam is created, there’s nowhere for the water to go, and when there’s sitting water, there’s always a chance of leakage under the shingles. The most common place for leaks from this will be on the exterior wall.

Added Weight

In a previous post, we talked about how roofs have a weight limit. Having all the snow and ice pile up on there will put stress on the structure. If it doesn’t have structural integrity, it’ll be more prone to damages. So make sure to get your roofs checked yearly to decrease the chances of further damage!
