Are You Picking the Right Siding For Your Home?

Siding protects your home from many outdoor hazards. If your outer walls were bare, they’d be constantly exposed to rain, heat, cold, and wildlife that threaten the integrity of your home. If you’re building a new home from the ground up or need to replace/repair your current siding, you may be wondering which brand and material to choose.

At Noble Roofing, our years of experience has led us to prefer the James Hardie brand. The reasons are numerous and can be found at our James Hardie page. We also know that you need to choose the product that’s going to suit your needs. To help you, here are 3 criteria to consider to make sure you’re picking the right siding.

Are you picking the right siding for your home?

1. Your Budget

Before you even start shopping, you should know how much you can spend. It’s just like buying a car or home. Any investment needs to be feasible. It’s not a good idea to go select some high-end material just to find out that your budget falls short. Therefore, you should assess your finances and see how much you can put toward your home. If you’re in an emergency situation, please also keep in mind that we do offer financing and payment plan options that give you more freedom in your selection.

Overall, vinyl siding is going to be the most economical option. The other popular option is fiber cement, which is what Hardie siding is made of. You can also go with cedar or log cabin siding, depending on the style of your home. However, if you do choose an organic material, be sure to get it treated periodically to prevent water damage, mold, and pests from damaging it.

2. Your Climate

When you’re shopping for siding, consider the weather patterns of your area. Since we cover the Northern Virginia area, we recommend siding that’s ideal for a temperate climate. We have mild springs and falls, hot summers, and the occasional bitterly cold winter. Overall, you can get away with a material that isn’t equipped for extreme temperatures. However, we highly recommend getting insulation wrapped around your home and installing some sturdy Hardieboard, which can also comes in insulated forms, to keep your energy bills as low as possible during our hot Virginian summers.

You should check with your contractor to see what siding is popular in your area. If you live somewhere that battles constantly hot or cold temperatures, you should consider getting more heavily insulated siding to save money on your heating and cooling bill.

3. Maintenance and Repairs

Maintaining your property is part of being a homeowner. Different materials require various degrees of care.

  • Vinyl is the easiest to repair and maintain. It’s light, colorfast, and doesn’t need to be painted. As trade-off though, it’s not fireproof or as durable as fiber cement.
  • Fiber cement (Hardieboard) requires painting every 5-10 years to keep its beautiful look. Its weight also makes it more difficult to replace. However, it’s highly resistant to fires and is stronger than vinyl and wood.
  • Wood shingles and log siding need to be regularly treated to prevent mold and rot from moisture damage.  The natural beauty of this material still draws in many homeowners because synthetic materials can’t fully replicate its charm.

You should consider these differences and decide which one is the best for your lifestyle, home, and personal preferences.
