Decorating With Your Roof’s Health In Mind

It’s that time of the year where it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Everyone is starting to put up their tree and hanging lights on their house. If you’re the type to decorate for the holidays, there’s a couple things to keep in mind before going all out.

1.) Roof Load

Every roof has a roof load which is how much weight your roof can hold. If that weight is exceeded, there will be damages. All the decorations that go on the roof should have their weight listed, so make sure it doesn’t go over the roof load. When hanging lights on the gutter, also keep it on the light side so that it doesn’t end up ripping off the roof.

2.) Hanging Lights Correctly

First things first, don’t put up decorations or lights when there’s snow, ice, or it’s wet out. Safety is of the utmost importance, so make sure conditions are good.

Never hang lights with things that puncture holes such as staples and nails. Even a small hole can create a leak in the roof. If you are hanging lights on the gutters, there are different types of clips to accommodate that. Avoid clips that go under the shingles because lights are not worth a damaged roof.

3.) Decorations and the Chimney

We love seeing Santa or the Grinch climbing in or out of the chimney, however, that can be very dangerous. Any decorations on, in, or around the chimney is a fire hazard and should be avoided. If you really want to put decorations there, just make sure to not use the fireplace.

While you’re up there decorating, it’s also a good idea to check out the health of your roof. If there’s anything wrong, just give us a call at (703) 404-0505 to speak to roofing experts. We will gladly come by and help you get it fixed.
