Outdoor Pests (and What You Can Do to Keep Them Away)!

In true Virginia fashion, warm weather has suddenly returned, giving way to glorious cookouts, fun outdoor festivals, and lazy days by the pool or sea. While venues are starting to heat up with great activities for entertainment-deprived Virginians, there’s another crowd that is also emerging. We’re talking about outdoor pests. Instead of hitting the local brewery for a game of cornhole, however, these pests are keen on making your home THEIR next hot spot. What can you do to keep these nuisances away?

Outdoor Pests (and what you can do to keep them away)!

1. Inspect your home.

Outdoor pests can’t get inside your home unless there’s a point of entry. The best way to make sure you don’t get ants, roaches, mice, and other pests in is to make sure there’s no way for them to enter. There’s plenty that you as a homeowner can do on your own in terms of inspection. There are obvious breaches like cracked soffits and fascia boards, damaged siding, cracks in your walls, and holes that can allow pests to enter from the outside. These problems are easy to identify. There are also sneaky pests like termites, carpenter bees, and ants that are tricky to control. Even if you think your home is sealed, they may still find a way in your walls or deck. The best way to be 100% sure your home is breach-free is to get a professional to inspect and treat your home each spring to keep the bugs and mice away.

2. Fix the issues.

You can probably fix some common breaches with some caulk (especially in the kitchen for bugs) or use steel wool to block mouse holes. When it comes to damaged roof parts, however, you’ll need pros like us to handle it. A cracked soffit or fascia can invite possums, raccoons, mice, and other troublesome pests into your attic. These parts can be difficult (and unsafe) to repair without the right tools and expertise. Thankfully, we have plenty of folks at Noble Roofing who are licensed, bonded, and insured– and most of all– ready to help you get your roof back in working order! Note: If you already have an infestation, you’ll need to hire professional exterminators right away. The chances are that if you see one roach or mouse, there are bound to be more. Only a real professional can get to the root of the problem and find ALL the breaches to make sure your home is secure in the future.

3. Prevent and treat.

The best way to make sure that these pests stay away is to get professional pest remediation. Treating your crawl space, yard, basement, and attic for pests will deter many problems from even occurring. Simply spraying your yard for bugs periodically will also help keep the numbers of ticks and fleas down, which is especially important if you have pets. Remember, an ounce of prevention can save you plenty of grief later on!
