Prep Your Home for Cold Temperatures this November

Autumn is a complicated season. Though it is nice and warm in the afternoons, out of nowhere you find yourself scraping frost off your car the following morning. These overnight chilly temperatures make your home feel colder as soon as the sun sets. We all know what that means… winter is coming. No, there may not be creatures from the far north setting to invade your home, but the threat of extreme cold may be just as bad for your comfort and heating bills. However, there are a few things you can do to prep your home for colder temperatures.

1. Service your HVAC.

Dirty filters, dusty compressors, and other faulty parts can make your HVAC work harder than it needs to. By getting your furnace serviced in the late fall, you can fix potential problems before it gets frigid outside. There’s nothing worse than being stuck in a cold house in January when you could have fixed the problem when temperatures were still in the 50s and 60s in the afternoon.

2. Check your attic’s insulation.

A lot of the heat in your home can leave through your attic! In fact, about 25% of heat loss can occur through a poorly insulated attic. It doesn’t cost much to get a roof inspection and to have a pro check out your attic to make sure that your insulation is in good shape. You can also get your attic checked for holes or any drafts that can lower your home’s energy efficiency. Proper roof design and maintenance is critical to keep your home at peak comfortable temperatures all year.

3. Check your windows and doors for drafts.

Another common source of heat loss is through cracks and drafts in your windows and doors. In fact, 40% of your heat can be lost in this manner. Updating old windows to new energy-star windows and doors is critical to keep your home cozy and free of that drafty feeling. There are not enough sherpa throws in the world to keep out the cold when your home is losing almost half of your HVAC’s heat.

4. Upgrade to insulated siding.

While you can lose about 25% of your heat through your roof, you can lose a whopping 35% through your walls!  But when you upgrade to vinyl or fiber cement that is reinforced with insulation, less heat escapes from the side of your house. Not all brands are top-performing though. Before you install new siding, talk to us. We have extensive experience in different brands and know what works. This is why we stand by 3 specific brands for siding: These companies offer siding that is reinforced with insulated materials that can keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. As you browse their selections, you’ll find different textures and patterns that can revitalize the way your home looks and how comfortable it is this upcoming winter.
