Trim Capping: Rescue Your Windows

If you have some older windows that are still holding up but the exterior trim isn’t looking like it used to, you may not have to install new windows quite yet. One way homeowners can give their exterior windows an upgrade without taking up too much time is to install trim capping.

Trim capping protects your windows’ frames from further damage and extends their life, buying you time before you need a full window replacement. (by the way, if you need a new window installation, look no further than ProVia, our favorite brand for its versatility and quality!)

What is Trim Capping?

Trim Capping is your solution to protect window frames that have chipped paint or have areas of vulnerability to exterior elements. It is also known as “wrapping”. Not only can you cap your window trim, but you can also can cap door trims, fascia boards, and rakes. Contractors mainly use aluminum or vinyl to cover existing structures.

  • Note: If your window frame is currently experiencing wood rot, we suggest that you replace the entire window. Covering up the damage isn’t going to make it go away, but eventually the rot will spread underneath the capping. Trim capping is only going to work if your frames are in good condition and are just in need of an aesthetic boost and an added layer of protection. The image to the right shows a window frame that is structurally unsound. Covering it up won’t fix it and you will inevitably need to replace your window.

Preferred Brands

At Noble Roofing, we prefer to install Mastic trim (also known as Ply Gem), CertainTeed, or Berger trim capping. These brands mainly offer capping in aluminum or vinyl. There are different textures and colors to choose from so that you can find the right match for your home. The aluminum capping comes in rolls so that your contractor can make the perfect custom fit on your existing windows. We can also install trim on new windows if you desire.

Design Ideas

You don’t have to wait until your windows visibly need an upgrade either. You may simply want to alter the look of your windows to enhance your curb appeal. We’re here to satisfy your exterior design ambitions.  Trim capping is versatile enough to fit nearly any mold, so it’s great for custom molds. You can also select different colors to match your home’s exterior color scheme. This can be an easy way to update your home, especially after you installed a new roof or siding.
