What Trims Fit Your Personality?

What separates an ordinary window or door from an extraordinary one?

A great trim!

When you get windows and doorways installed, there’s often a bit of “wiggle room” between the opening in the wall and the window/door so that it can actually be fitted to your home. What disguises the unsightly gaps between the window and the wall is its trim. This component also helps keeps drafts out and has your door or window fitting nice and snug.

On top of its functionality, trims can spice up your home’s curb appeal and interior design. You can go from basic to elaborate depending on your taste and budget.

What trims fit your personality? Let’s talk about different styles.

Colonial- Classic & Sophisticated

This plain yet sophisticated style can blend in any room. It is stately, clean, and uncomplicated. There are graduated horizontal and vertical indentations that create a unified design without getting too carried away. If you like simplicity but want a bit of embellishment to your windows, you should choose a colonial trim.

2 1/4 Flat Stock- Straight to the point

This trim is much plainer than the colonial style. It’s actually composed of just standard flat “blocks” that surround the window. There are absolutely no frills to this look. 2 1/4 flat stock trims are suited for contemporary looks or for anyone who doesn’t like “fancy” window trim and needs a trim that can fit in anywhere.

Craftsmen-Standard with a Slight “Edge”

This bold trim is an eye-catcher. The large horizontal flat trim on top demands attention as it is much wider than the vertical trims that stem from below. Add some gorgeous curtains and window treatments to complete the look!

Cambridge- Timeless & Romantic

Reminiscent of Grecian columns, this elegant tiered trim style has different levels of horizontal and vertical peaks and valleys. Cambridge trims offer a classic look that is great for historical homes or any person who simply loves the beauty of a timeless trim.

Fillets & Casing Caps- for that “Something Extra”

You can add extra flair to any of these trim styles in the form of a fillet or casing cap. A fillet is basically a piece of trim that sticks out farther than the rest of the trim. It is situated at the bottom of the trim. Casing caps apply the same concept to the top of the trim.

Honorable mention: Exterior Shutters

These are the standard go-to add-on for exterior windows. They’re mainly decorative as they are installed on each side of your window and generally don’t have any functional value. It was more common generations ago to have fully functional exterior shutters to keep out the hot sun to keep the home cool, especially when there was no air conditioner. These days, however, we simply enjoy the look of shutters without needing to actually use them to cool down our homes. You can still find old-fashioned shutters like these in historic homes. It’s also possible to install traditional ones and benefit from their energy-saving abilities.
