How to Check for Storm Damage

Spring and summer bring warm weather and fun days in the sun, but they also come with the occasional severe storm. After a gusty day with a side of rain and hail, how do you check for storm damage? Thankfully, there’s plenty a homeowner can do on his own to check for these signs without having to spend money on an inspection. Here’s what you can do on your own after a big storm has passed by.

Checking for Storm Damage

When the forecast calls for tornado warnings and possible hail, you know that it’s time to move all your loose items in the garage and stay inside. It’s also important to do some damage control after the storm to see if your roof (and other parts of your home) have incurred any damage. Here’s what to keep an eye out for. An ounce of prevention and early detection can save you hundreds and even thousands in eventual water damage. So as soon as you safely can, get outside and check to see if there have been any adverse effects after the storm.

Hail

Hail is usually smaller than marbles, but sometimes you can get the bad ones that are the size of baseballs. These kinds of impacts can shatter certain types of shingles or leave dents.  Here’s what to look for:

  • Dents on the shingles, flashing, gutters, and downspouts
  • Missing granules on your asphalt shingles
  • Cracked, broken, or bruised shingles
  • Other missing roofing components like eaves and overhangs

Wind

High winds can also deal some damage to your roof. They can cause branches to fall and hit your roof, while strong winds can do other kinds of damage. Here’s what to look out for:

  • Missing shingles
  • Dents on roof
  • Impacts from branches

To minimize wind damage, move all your loose items, like poolside chairs, lawn care equipment, children’s toys, and other outdoor accessories inside your shed or garage.

Water

Storms also bring a lot of water. When your roof is damaged from hail or wind, water can enter your roof and cause issues in your home. What’s sneaky about water damage is that it can take days or weeks for you to notice the effects. Here’s what to look for:

  • Mold growth
  • Damage to home’s structure
  • Water spots on ceilings and walls
  • Soggy or expanding wood
  • leaks in roof or ceiling
  • Damp, musty odor

Storms can also cause issues with your siding, basement, and other parts of the home. If you have any questions about your roof after a storm, give us a call and we’ll come over and assess the situation.
