Moss on Your Roof

All this rainy weather and cloudy days with random spikes of warm temperatures make it prime time for moss to emerge. If you live in a wooded area, you may also find moss more common.

Though it may look attractive on the forest floor, moss doesn’t belong your roof. At Noble Roofing, our highest recommendation is to remove moss as soon as you see it. Moss can seriously wear down your shingles and make a roof replacement happen sooner than you would like!

But as with any roofing problem, it usually starts out small and isn’t that expensive to fix at first. Nip this problem in the bud today!

Why Remove Moss?

Moss can shorten the life of your roof. That’s the biggest reason to remove it. It doesn’t matter if you installed an economic version of asphalt or spent thousands on a clay roof— moss can wear down any material and seriously affect the decrease the lifespan of your roof.

Moss starts out growing between your shingles, looking pretty harmless. But then, as the moss grows, it lifts the shingles from underneath, which lets in water. This makes your home vulnerable to leaks and water damage!

Any investment as costly as a roof should be protected so your finances can be in good order.  So how can you get moss off your roof and stop it from coming back?

#1: Clean the Moss Off

If you have all the safety gear and roofing know-how, here’s how to do a DIY removal:

Safely get near your roof with a ladder or scaffold and use professional cleaners like Bayer 2-in-1 Moss & Algae Killer, which is kind of like the round-up for roof moss. To reach places that you can’t access from your ladder, you’ll need to wear slip-resistant footwear and wear a harness to protect yourself from any falls. Follow all manufacturer directions when applying your moss killers and remember to be gentle on your roof at all times.

However, if you can’t physically complete the job for any reason, call a roofing pro who has all the right equipment to do the job safely.

**P.s. Do NOT powerwash moss off your roof. Using this method will further wear down your shingles and shorten their lifespan.

#2:  Prevent the Moss from Coming Back

Now that you’ve gotten rid of the moss, your next job is to prevent a new colony from erupting. You can ask a pro to install strips of zinc sheet metal below the tip ridges of your roof. Copper is more effective, but it’s more expensive.

Also, moss naturally thrives in shaded areas, so cutting any overhanging branches that continually leave shade over your roof can help prevent more moss from growing.
